A distinctive landmark of Brno, the original residence of Přemysl princes often changed its owners in the course of centuries. The castle became an important fortress (it stood up to the Swedish onslaught) and later a prison house. Revolutionaries from entire Europe suffered and died in the dungeons of Špilberk, as well as many other convicts, the most famous of them being probably the legendary brigand Babinský. The notorious prison of nations was a place of horrors also during the World War Two. Since 1961, Špilberk has been under administration of Museum of Brno, which offers tour of its casemate and expositions of prison system of the 18th and 19th century.

More detail about the object:

Špilberk Castle was built as a royal castle in the 13 century under the reign of the Přemyslid dynasty. After it successfully held out against the Swedish army in 1645, it was rebuilt as an imposing Baroque fortress.

Since the end of the 18thcentury it served almost uninterruptedly as a prison and military barracks until the 1960s, when it was declared a National Cultural Monument and became the headquarters of the Brno City Museum. Today the castle offers visitors numerous exhibitions and displays, as well as the famous casemates. The original purpose of the casemates was to give the garrison a place to hide. In 1783 they were rebuilt as a prison, designed for especially tough criminals. Now in these rooms we can find an exhibition on the Baroque design of fortifications and prisons at the time of Joseph II.

Permanent exhibitions:

  • Casemates Originally a refuge for the garrison, in the 18th century they became a prison for especially dangerous convicts.
  • Špilberk from Castle to Fortress The structural development of the castle.
  • Vulcanalia Exhibition of fireworks from historical times up to the present.
  • Špilberk – Prison of the Nations Legendary prison of the Habsburg monarchy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Southwest Bastion Early Baroque castle fortification; a guided tour can be booked.
  • Observation Tower Beautiful view across Brno from a castle tower.
