State Chateau Litomyšl is a rare example of an adaptation of an Italian Renaissance palace for the conditions of transalpine countries. It was built in the 1560-80s by Vratislav of Perstain as a gift for his beloved wife Maria Manrique de Lara. The Perstain Renaissance estate was completed by Baroque renovations carried out by other owners in the 17th and 18th century - the Trauttmansdorf and Wallenstein, with the help of the finest Baroque artists. The preserved Baroque chateau theatre from 1797 is a rarity. In 1999 the chateau was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

More detail about the object:

The Renaissance castle in the style of Italian mansions has been the dominant and adornment of Litomyšl for more than four centuries. Within the years 1568-1581, one of the most influential men of the Czech Kingdom of his time, Vratislav II. of Pernštejn, had it built for his wife Maria Manrique de Lara as a gift of love. If you want to be taken to sunny Italy at least for a while, do not miss a tour of the fabulous building which boasts of being included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. The Litomyšl Castle Area was included among the monuments of global importance due to its original architecture, valuable sgraffito decoration and almost unchanged historical form. Try to count the thousands of sgraffito envelopes that adorn the facade of the castle. It is said that not even two of them are the same.

In the course of the centuries, the castle itself did not avoid the influence of contemporary fashion. As a result, you can see not only Classicism-decorated representative halls, but also a unique gem in the form of a family palace theater with a preserved set of scenery and machinery. Only five such theaters have been preserved in the whole of Europe.

No less eye-catching is the visit to the castle cellar where the extensive exposition of the distinctive sculptures by Olbram Zoubek found refuge. Did you know that it was Olbram Zoubek who led a team of restorers in the 1970s and 1980s? Their merit was to restore the faded beauty of sgraffitoes on the facades of the castle. The cool environment of the castle cellar also provides an ideal environment for the famous wax sculpture of Heart for Václav Havel.

After a tour of the castle and the surrounding gardens, do not forget to visit the birthplace of Bedřich Smetana in the Castle Brewery. It was the area of Litomyšl castle that has witnessed the birth and the first musical steps of one of the founders of Czech national music.
