The building stems from the prototype of a Jesuit church with a ring of chapels above the main nave. The most expressive element of the undulated frontispiece of the cathedral is the monumental portal with twisted columns, a balcony with a balustrade and cartouche. The cathedral's interior has lavish stucco work and painted ornamentation.
